GUIDELINES FOR APPLYING THE PRECAUTIONARY
PRINCIPLE
to biodiversity conservation and natural resource
management
This is the first international set of guidance for
applying the precautionary principle in the area of biodiversity conservation
and NRM. We hope they will be widely adopted and used and developed within a
broad range of specific conservation and NRM contexts. The Guidelines present a
set of recommendations derived from several years of research and consultation,
involving the expertise and experience of a very wide range of individuals and
organisations from many regions, disciplines, sectors and perspectives. They have been
developed and finalised through an extensive review process, including
regional workshops, the project's
e-conference and the final
international workshop. The
Guidelines have been widely disseminated and promoted to key policy-makers and
within relevant national and international forums.

BOOK:
Biodiversity and the Precautionary Principle:
Risk and Uncertainty in Conservation and
Sustainable Use
This is the first book to examine the application of the
precautionary principle to conservation. It brings
together fifteen case studies, commissioned by the project
from around the world. These case studies are written by respected conservation
professionals and reflect different approaches of, and challenges to, the use of
precaution in biological conservation. Barney Dickson and Rosie Cooney, the
manager and co-ordinator of this project, are the volume's editors.

E-CONFERENCE
In June 2005 the project held an open-access electronic conference on this site
as part of the process of developing best practice guidance. Comments were
invited on a first draft of the guidance. You can read this draft and the
comments received on it.

ISSUES
PAPER
"The Precautionary Principle in Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resource
Management, an Issues Paper for Decision Makers" was published in 2004
as part of the IUCN Policy and Global Change Series. It is an overview of the
issues addressed by the project: the meaning of the precautionary principle, its
acceptance in law and policy and the challenges surrounding its implementation
in biodiversity conservation and natural resource management.

REGIONAL WORKSHOPS
Issues of
biological conservation vary between regions of the world and the perspective
from developing countries has been overlooked in some past discussions about the
precautionary principle. The project has held three regional workshops in order
to gain perspectives from Africa, Asia and the Pacific and Latin America. You
can download the reports here.

America:

Precautionary Principle in Biodiversity Conservation and Natural Resource
Management: Uncertainty, Risk, Biodiversity and Livelihoods.' Summary report
