Many critics and observers suggest mankind's efforts to manage the environment fail because input on the socioeconomic affects of proposed actions is not sought. I believe any dispassionate reading of the history of both U.S. and Canadian management of North Atlantic fisheries will clearly lay the blame for the collapse of those fisheries on the consistent prevalence of socioeconomic interests over precutionary management principles. The problem, as I see it, is that the process gets too little socioeconomic input from people whose lives are directly affected and too much socioeconomic input from interests whose profits may be affected. The preceeding is a statement of my personal opinion. It does not necessarily reflect the viewpoint of the Ocean Wildnerness Network's Executive Committee and/or its constituant organizations.
