As much as I support the concern for biodiversity, it gives rise to a number of problems. (1) It normally focusses upon fur, feathers and flowers; all too litte real consideration is given to other life forms. (2) It is often judged by lists of species, which tell us very little indeed; assessment should demand evidence of ecological integrity and health (3) What about geodiversity - the very foundation upon which much biodiversity depends and (4) Tribal people and others living close to their environmental traditions may value the environment in a very diferent way to the essentially modernist perspective of biodiversity; how can we help to ensure that their interests and needs are heard?
